Dar Moulouya
The Ourika valley spreads between the first foothills of the Atlas Mountains and the city. Despite being so close to Marrakech, this beautiful lush green valley is definitely one of the best preserved in Morocco. Through an imposing arched entrance over a canal bridge, you enter an enclosed domaine where you will find just ten villas in private and peaceful seclusion.
The entrance to the house is through a glorious Andalucian style courtyard filled with pungent orange and lemon trees and a cooling fountain. This immaculate and wonderful house was built in 2004 in traditional style and named after Morocco's most beautiful river.
Dar Moulouya is only 20 minutes from the bustling Medina of Marrakech but is utterly peaceful and set in a large garden, spectacularly planted with a thousand roses, bougainvillea, plumbago, olive, pomegranate and banana trees as well as cool, soft lawn for children to run and play on. The garden is home to Leila and Charlie, the tortoise couple, who boss around the exotic birds and butterflies drawn to this much loved garden The English owners have cleverly designed the house in an exotic and dramatic way with much love and affection, creating a deeply sumptuous and restful pad as an escape from the buzz that is Morocco.
The pretty, colourful bedrooms are either on the ground floor of the villa, or in the Pavilion a few steps away. At the top of the floodlit staircase in the entrance hall and the pierced oblong dome is very impressive; the Media room with bar, which opens onto the upper terrace with Moroccan style seating and shady pergola, overlooks the gardens and stunning views of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. A perfect spot for aperitifs.
The Pavilion is ideal either for guests or teenagers who want their own space.
Please note that mid summer in this part of the country there is a lovely dry heat and the house itself is very cool.
