Villa Pizzorusso

Villa Pizzorusso is a historic “masseria” located in the heart of Puglia within easy reach of Lecce, the Ionian and Adriatic coastlines and the famous white villages. This impressive property is situated on 15 acres in the midst of olive groves and five minutes from the town of Mesagne with medieval castle, butchers, bakers, cafes and restaurants.

Masserias are particularly evocative of this region, being one of the two indigenous architectural structures of Puglia, along with the conical “trulli”. The oldest part of the house dates from the 1500’s, when masserias were flourishing — at that time they were built as protected, self-sustaining farm compounds and walled to keep out invaders. In the 1800’s masserias entered a more refined stage of development.  The landed gentry moved to their country properties from the nearby towns and expanded and rebuilt them to meet their tastes. Pizzorusso’s Moorish design elements, intricate tile work, frescoed ceilings and grand arched windows date from this era.

Each of the bedrooms is spacious and steeped in character, some with star vault ceilings and ancient stone floors and fabulous bathrooms combine ancient with modern such as the grand master bathroom with its iconic modern bathtub (Spoon by Agape) and a shower that has been built inside one of the small turrets that mark each corner of the building

Within the vast interior courtyard is the spectacular 25 meter swimming pool, an “aranceto” (orange grove) and ancient wood oven as well as large terrace and garden areas. The courtyard is over ½ acre and enclosed by the original 12-foot high wall made from varieties of local stone. There is a fabulous vegetable garden and numerous mature trees including fig, acacia, laurel, cacti, pomegranate and pear as well as Roman columns. Beneath the fabulous wisteria covered pergola is a large dining table and chairs providing the perfect location for breakfast, a long lingering al fresco lunch or dinner on a typical balmy Puglian evening. Outside the impressive entrance of the villa provides another yet location for dining in the evening and the garden lighting is subtly positioned to create an even more magical ambiance.

Villa Pizzorusso is an immersion into the soul of Puglia.  Living in an historic masseria is a distinctive opportunity to connect viscerally with the rhythms and the landscapes of Puglia. For over 600 years masserias were at the centre of the agricultural life of the region. Only a few of these historic treasures have been brought back to life. Villa Pizzorusso was abandoned for 50 years before its restoration began three years ago. Its fundamental integrity has been preserved and brought up to date with modern amenities. Villa Pizzorusso is authentic Puglia — a glorious place to linger, live and serve as your base to experience all that is Puglia.
