Mauritius lies at the heart of the Indian Ocean, 220km northeast of Réunion and 900km east of Madagascar. Its geographical situation at the cross-roads of Africa, Asia and Europe is reflected in its cultural make-up. Coral reefs surround almost all 160km of Mauritius’ coastline, protecting it from the onslaughts of the ocean and providing a series of tranquil lagoons backed by mountains covered in virgin forest.
